A microscale collector-injector (COIN), consisting of a passive micro preconcentrator (mu PP) and a progressively heated micro injector (PHI), is described. The PP achieved predictable, nearly constant, zero-power (diffusional) sampling rates for 24 hr (at 1 mg/m(3)) and over a 2,500-fold concentration range (for 15-min samples). The mu PHI achieved injections < 250 ms wide at <= 0.5 rriUmin, An ionic-liquid surface modifier imparted high selectivity for polar compounds to the carbon adsorbents employed. A hybrid-integrated mu COIN showed encouraging preliminary results and a monolithic mu COIN has been fabricated. mu COIN promises to enable low-power micro gas chromatographic (mu GC) analyses of vapor mixtures in numerous applications.
