Cross-sectional associations of tau protein biomarkers with semantic and episodic memory in older adults without dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

•Tau-associated memory impairment is already detectable in non-demented older adults.•Tau burden was associated with lower scores on both episodic and semantic memory.•Episodic memory tasks demonstrated the strongest associations with tau burden.•Tau via PET yielded stronger associations with cognition than CSF or histopathology.•A combination of tau and cognitive markers could benefit early clinical diagnosis.
