•Preparation of PLA nanospheres modified with BSA or magnetic nanoparticles.•Hydrodynamic size and zeta potential was controlled by the added amount of BSA.•Magnetic PLA nanospheres were superparamagnetic.•The strongest destroying effect on insulin fibrils has the smallest particles.•The best inhibitor of insulin fibrillation was magnetic PLA nanospheres.
