•The Meidang Formation should be an individual sedimentary sequence rather than the upper part of the Kunyang Group.•The Kunyang Group and Meidang Formation record sedimentation undercontinental rift to passive and finally to active continental margin setting.•The Yangtze Block was located north of India and west of Australia and East Antarctica blocks during the assembly of Rodinia.
