•We studied wood stake decomposition in the mineral soil of 3 Lake States LTSP study sites.•Wood decomposition was not altered by organic matter removal treatments.•Wood stake decomposition was higher in unharvested reference plots.•Inherent site quality, measured as site index, affected wood stake decomposition.•Microbial community composition did not vary among treatments, but with site productivity.
