•HPTLC profiling for apricot products adulterated with pumpkin was developed.•Method greenness based on the analytical eco-scale was excellent.•Regression chemometric techniques succeeded in the differentiation.•Apricot-pumpkin pulp mixtures simulated falsifications down to 2.5%.•Most important carotenoids were identified as characteristic markers.
