•Preschoolers showed ingroup bias in predicting anonymous sharing.•Ingroup bias in predicted sharing became flexible between age 5 and 6.•Six-year-olds predicted the ingroup to give more only in public condition.•Second-order theory of mind contributed to such a flexible ingroup bias.
