•Tritium production by loading Li rod into the HTGR was proposed.•Zr is used as tritium absorber to contain tritium in the Li rods.•The nuclear reaction heat can cause a spatial temperature profile in the Li rods.•The tritium containment performance of Al2O3 and Zr strongly depend on temperature.•The effect of the reaction heat on the tritium containment performance was evaluated.
