Astaxanthin (AST), (family xanthophylls), is a food colorant used for animal, fish and nutritional supplements in humans. It has antioxidant activity. Brain and spinal cord injuries need neuroprotective treatment. The AST protects neuronal apoptosis and promotes regeneration. It quenches the free radicals to inhibit lipid peroxidation of neurons and promotes antioxidant enzyme production. Additionally the AST possesses anti-inflammatory property and prevents brain edema.
