Supplementation with sodium butyrate protects against antibiotic-induced increases in ethanol consumption behavior in mice

•Sodium butyrate supplementation protected against antibiotic-induced increase in ethanol intake.•Sodium butyrate supplementation did not alter the basal ethanol intake level.•Sodium butyrate supplementation lowered ethanol preference in a 2-bottle choice study.•Sodium butyrate did not affect reduction in bacterial diversity or composition caused by antibiotic treatment.
