Kefir modulates gut microbiota and reduces DMH-associated colorectal cancer via regulation of intestinal inflammation in adulthood offsprings programmed by neonatal overfeeding

•Nutritional changes in early life influence the development of diseases in adulthood, according to “developmental programming”.•Overfed rats in the neonatal period show greater adiposity and tumor incidence in adulthood.•The administration of kefir during the development period reversed the effects of neonatal overfeeding.•Kefir was responsible for less tumor development, histological damage, and reduction of inflammatory biomarkers in the colon.
