Water Saturated Rock Sample in Air

In this section, the seismoelectric measurements are conducted with water-saturated rock samples in air. A cylinder sandstone sample is water saturated. An acoustic transducer generates an acoustic wave at one end of the cylinder sample and the electric signals induced by the acoustic wave on the cylinder surface are measured with an electrode. The measurements are repeated with the dry cylinder sample and the electric signals induced by the piezoelectric effects are measured and compared with the seismoelectric signals. A layered model with Lucite and water-saturated sandstone is built to measure the seismoelectric signals induced by the acoustic waves. The seismoelectric signals, whose apparent velocity is the acoustic velocity, are compared with the acoustic waveforms to confirm that the electric signals are coseismic seismoelectric signals, whose apparent velocity is the acoustic velocity. The seismoelectric measurements in air show the different conversion principles between seismoelectric conversion and piezoelectric effect.
