Electrodeposition of bitumen-, asphaltene-, or maltene-coated kaolinite from cyclohexane suspensions

•Three different coated kaolinite samples were electrodeposited from cyclohexane.•Bitumen- and maltene-coated kaolinites were mainly deposited on anode (+)•Asphaltene-coated kaolinite was deposited on both anode (+) and cathode (–).•Carboxyl groups were the main contributor to the negative charges of coated kaolinite.•Deposited anode and cathode films had different N, S, and C contents and states.
