•The modified Kumaraswamy (MK) and the reflected MK (RMK) distributions are presented.•The MK and RMK are alternatives to the beta and Kumaraswamy distributions.•The MK density assumes increasing-decreasing-increasing shapes.•Important statistical properties of MK and RMK distributions are presented.•An application to Brazilian hydro-environmental data is presented and discussed.
