•Leaf traits mediate large leaf-to-air temperature difference (ΔT) variability.•Leaf width, Vcmax, and stomatal slope are the dominant traits.•The trait's relative importance in regulating ΔT is largely dynamic within a day.•Model-derived trait-ΔT relationships agree well with field observations.
