•Current models of cancer result in low yield and high cost of drug testing.•Cancer metastasis is of greatest interest and most difficult to model.•New models provide patient-specific studies of cancer progression and treatment.•The model complexity can be tailored to capture the specific aspects of cancer.•We propose a framework for selecting and designing an appropriate model.
