Fire after clear-cut harvesting minimally affects the recovery of ecosystem carbon pools and fluxes in a Great Lakes forest

•Fire after clear cut had minor effects on a century of carbon pool, flux recovery.•Century-old recovering forests stored as much carbon as older legacy stands.•Late successional legacy stands were variable carbon sinks and large carbon stores.•Temperature extremes increased soil respiration and may be eroding the carbon sink.
