Quantifying vegetation and its effect on aeolian sediment transport: A UAS investigation on longitudinal dunes

•The strongest predictor of aeolian activity was the mean scaled gap length.•Fractional cover was closely related, but was affected by plant distribution.•Frontal area index and shadow casting were moderately associated with rippled area.•Shadow casting and plant height retrieval were affected by surface model noise.
