One-step microwave pyrolysis synthesis of bagasse biochar/ferrites nanocomposite and synergistic effect on As(V) adsorption in water

In this study, the sugarcane bagasse solid waste was used as raw material to prepare a novel bagasse biochar/ ferrites (BB/FE) nanocomposite by one-step microwave pyrolysis method. This nanocomposite was used to adsorb As(V) in wastewater and the maximum As(V) adsorption capacity of 12.8 mg/g was successfully achieved under the experimental conditions. The synergistic effect of bagasse biochar and ferrites on As(V) adsorption was comprehensively investigated by TEM, FT-IR, XPS, adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics analysis, and DFT calculations. The results showed that the excellent As(V) adsorption performance of the BB/FE nanocomposite was attributed to the synergistic effects including electrostatic interaction, redox reaction, and complexation. This study not only develops a new pathway for bagasse resource utilization, but also provides theoretical guidance for design and preparation of high-performance nanocomposite adsorbents.
