A study on loops and eddies identified from the trajectories of drifters in the North Indian Ocean

•Loops and eddies with larger radii are observed in the western and central Bay of Bengal and the southwestern Arabian Sea.•Peak in number of loops and eddies is observed during April-May in the Arabian Sea and during September-October in the Bay of Bengal.•In the Bay of Bengal, the temporal variation of cyclonic eddies matches with the variation in chlorophyll.
