•High grade astrocytomas incurable due to diffuse infiltrative nature of cancer cells.•Grade 4 astrocytoma cells can be killed in vitro with Photodynamic Therapy (PDT).•Difficult to deliver light from external source if location of target cells not known.•Bioluminescence can generate light for PDT in cancer cells.•Luciferase transfected astrocytoma cells killed using bioluminescence activated PDT.
