•Calculated stress distribution on RCP rotor-can during service condition using finite element method.•Obtained the fatigue properties and tensile properties of Hastelloy C276 by fatigue test and tensile test.•Verified the service reliability of AP1000 RCP rotor-can based on the calculating results and experimental results.
