•[(COD)(NHC)RhCl] complexes can be conveniently prepared by microwave assisted synthesis.•[(COD)(NHC)RhCl] complexes trigger strong cytotoxic effects against cancer cells.•Isopropyl side chains at the nitrogen atoms of the NHC ligands are preferred over ethyl side chains.
