•Pre-calcination temperature/time define the organic residues in precursor powder.•Different amounts of organic residues lead to different particle sizes/morphology.•Pre-calcination at 200 °C for 40 h results in 1–4 µm powder of well-defined facets.•Electrochemical performance is improved using these pre-calcination conditions.
