A simple approach to the synthesis of hexahydroacridine-1,8(2H,5H)-dione via one pot three component condensation of aromatic aldehydes, dimedone, and ammonium acetate in water using activated fly ash, (an industrial waste pollutant) as an efficient catalyst is described. Excellent yields, catalyst recovery and reusability, easy work-up, environmentally benign clean and green processes are attractive features of this protocol. All the synthesized hexahydroacridine-1,8(2H,5H)-dione were characterized on the basis of their melting-points, elemental analysis and spectral data.
