•UV-LED (280 nm)/O3 process is more energy-saving and efficient than LPUV/O3 process.•UV-LED (280 nm)/O3 process is a promising organic wastewater treatment technology.•In UV-LED/O3 process, OH and O2− were primary active species.•Alkaline condition and sufficient oxidation time can reduce the toxicity of effluent.
