•He2+ irradiation is a controllable method for Sb2Te3 defect engineering.•The successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction was used to deposit Ag2S.•The surface defects of Sb2Te3 can affect the particle size and distribution of Ag2S.•The Ag2S/Sb2Te3 heterojunction has more active sites, low Rct, and high conductivity.•The more hydrophilic Ag2S/Sb2Te3 surface also promotes HER performance.
