•Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) has no potential benefits over other blocks.•Meta analysis reveled that ESPB was not effective in reducing postoperative pain.•ESPB had no effect on postoperative 24-h cumulative opioid levels.•Potential mechanisms of ESPB need to be further investigated in liver surgery.
