Design of A Broadband and High-Gain 5G Millimeter-Wave Antenna

A broadband and high-gain microstrip antenna for 5G communication operating in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) spectrum is proposed with coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed. The overall size of the antenna is 12 × 12 × 1.6 mm 3 , and it is composed of an internal radiation patch, a metal structure with a circular slot, and a ground plane with a defected ground structure. The metal structure with a circular slot introduces an additional resonance frequency to extend the bandwidth, and the three rectangular openings on it and the three rectangular slots on the ground plane are used to improve the directional radiation characteristics of the antenna. The simulation results show that the bandwidth of the antenna is 23.95-29.08 GHz which means its relative bandwidth is 19.3%, and the antenna can achieve a peak gain of 7.9 dBi with good directional radiation characteristics. These advantages make the proposed antenna a good candidate for 5G millimeter-wave antenna unit in the future.
