Thermal Degradation of Cannabinoids and Cannabis Terpenes

Current understanding of the potential health risks and harm reduction properties associated with cannabis concentrate vaping is lacking, despite its prevalence. The studies described in this chapter address this knowledge gap. Extensive investigations of the identities, levels, and origins of aerosol harmful and potentially harmful constituents are described, along with factors that influence emission levels of THC and terpenes. Specific topics include how temperature, as well as myrcene levels, impact the aerosolization efficiency of THC as well as the production of specific volatile organics. Technical issues encountered are described as well. This is a relatively new field, and there is much to learn. This chapter is intended to promote interest in this burgeoning and impactful area of research.
