The Pain-Invalidation Scale: Measuring Patient Perceptions of Invalidation Toward Chronic Pain

•Invalidation of chronic pain through disbelief or over-attentiveness can be damaging.•To identify the source of pain invalidation, a multi-domain scale was developed and validated.•Subscales included the Self, Immediate Others, Healthcare Professionals and Over-attentive Others.•The subscales were psychometrically sound and correlated with related measures.•Addressing the source of pain invalidation may promote treatment adherence and progress.
