•The diffuse ochre trace on a flint pebble from Maschio dell’Artemisio was studied;•A colorimetric approach was applied to study the pigments of the Palaeolithic;•Colorimetric and FORS data were acquired and compared;•By second-derivative DRS, the content of yellow and red ochres was estimated;•The mixture of yellow and red ochre on the pebble may reflect a local supply.
