•Sex/religion, contamination, and disorganization SLE predicted the presence of clinical OCD symptoms.•Contamination SLE predicted clinical hoarding disorder symptoms.•Sex/religion, contamination and bullying SLE predicted the presence of clinical skin picking.•These effects were independent from compulsivity and family history of OCRDs.
