•Seven AGS causes p53- and mitochondria-dependent apoptosis of the hippocampal cells.•Loss of the hippocampal cells after 7 AGS is rescued by autophagy.•Fourteen-day audiogenic kindling provokes fulfill limbic seizures.•After 14 AGS, irreversible loss of granular and hilar mossy cells is observed.•Fourteen-day audiogenic kindling of KM rats is a valid model of human TLE.
