•10 TPs of NEB identified after UV radiation.•The early development of zebrafish was affected by NEB concentrations as low as to 100 ng/L.•NEB and its UV-TPs affected the antioxidant, immune and nervous systems of zebrafish.•UV irradiation can reduce the toxicity of NEB.
