Doppler Beam Sharpening for Enhanced MIMO Imagery in the Presence of Automotive Interference

The application of Doppler beam sharpening (DBS) for enhanced imagery in a multiple-input, multiple-output radar is investigated for the first time as a technique to mitigate automotive radar interference. It is shown that DBS, in addition to improved cross-range resolution for more precise target detection, suppresses interference, with complete removal of interference in certain cases. A quantitative analysis of interference suppression as a function of the victim radar velocity, look angle and integration period is presented for various interference types, demonstrating the effectiveness of DBS with a minor software upgrade in the state-of-the-art automotive sensors.
