•Multi-channel carbon nanofibers with hollow Co3O4 (MCNF@H-Co3O4) are synthesized.•MCNF@H-Co3O4 aerogel electrode has high specific capacity and ultra-long cycle life.•N/O co-doped hollow MCNF aerogel as negative electrode exhibits high capacitances.•The asymmetric supercapacitor shows high energy density and long cycling lifespan.
