•Astrocytic markers GFAP, vimentin, S100B and Aldh1L1, but not GS, are differentially increased following KA treatment.•Both A1-like and A2-like astrocyte markers are increased in KA-treated animals.•KA treatment transiently enhances the levels of total/phospho-tau.•KA treatment enhances the level/expression of cleaved tau in a subset of astrocytes.
