•Oldest magmatic record of the Chiapas Massif Complex metamorphic basement, Mexico.•U-Pb zircon geochronology reveals ∼1.5 Ga protolith and ∼0.95 Ga metamorphic ages.•Newly defined Catarina Unit differs from Oaxaquia also by Sm-Nd isotope signatures.•Calymmian magmatism developed in a magmatic arc at Amazonia’s active margin.•Tonian high-T event reflects onset of extension following Rodinia assemblage.
