Warming effects on tree-ring variables in P. hartwegii Lindl. at the extremes of its natural elevational distribution in central Mexico

•Thinner rings and lower wood density at higher altitudes indicate lower productivity.•Lower productivity at higher elevation sing no effect of warming in radial growth.•Temperature influenced greatly the dynamic of P. hartwegii radial growth.•Growth-density correlation suggest trade-off in biomass allocation at high altitude.
