Early-pregnancy universal screening for gestational diabetes is associated with a reduced risk of large-for-gestational-age neonates compared to other types of screening.

Overall, early screening and treatment for GDM did not reduce the risk of LGA at birth. However, trials that screened all participants at their first visit and treated early, most for a HbA1c 5.7-6.4%, had a reduced risk of LGA at birth compared to routine care, suggesting a possible benefit of screening all pregnant patients. Future well-designed trials are needed.
