New challenges for the control of human schistosomiasis: The possible impact of wild rodents in Schistosoma mansoni transmission

•Wild rodents are highly susceptible to infection with different Schistosoma species.•There is evidence of hybridization between S. mansoni and S. rodhaini in nature.•In Brazil, H. sciureus and N. squamipes are the main wild reservoirs for S. mansoni.•S. mansoni strains from wild rodents have unknown consequences for schistosomiasis.•Effective schistosomiasis control programs should consider infected wild rodents.
