•Birth to surgery interval of 4–6 months crucial for stereopsis in congenital cataract.•Better stereopsis in bilateral congenital cataract than unilateral counterpart.•Stereopsis drops by 9%–16% in congenital cataracts with pre-existing strabismus.•No association found between strabismus and stereopsis in developmental cataracts.
