•Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) have an increased frequency of venous thromboembolism (VTE)•Factors associated with VTE in patients with SCD include an elevated body mass index, prior surgical splenectomy, and an elevated white blood cell count•Patients with sickle cell disease have a high risk of recurrence after their first VTE•Patients with sickle cell disease have an increased rate of vasoocclusive events in the five years following their VTE diagnosis
