Potential of an endophytic fungus Alternaria tenuissima PE2 isolated from Psidium guajava L. for the production of bioactive compounds

•Fungal endophyte Alternaria tenuissima PE2 has been isolated from common fruit plant Psidium guajava L.•Ethyl acetate (EA) extract showed adverse effect on bacterial cell morphologies and inhibited their key metabolic enzymes.•Also found effective to inhibit the growth of pathogenic as well as spoilage fungal strains.•It displayed drastic effect on the growth of human-pathogenic yeast Candida albicans with cidal mode of action.•Numbers of bioactive compounds were detected by thin layer chromatographic (TLC) separation followed by GC-MS analysis.
