•7-ketocholesterol (7KC) and 7β-hydroxycholesterol (7β-OHC) are mainly formed by cholesterol autoxidation.•7KC and 7β-OHC are associated with some age-related and civilization diseases.•Nutrients of the Mediterranean diet counteract 7KC and 7β-OHC-induced cytotoxicity.•Mediterranean oils counteract 7KC- and 7β-OHC-induced cytotoxicity.
