•ClRbohD functions in chilling-induced H2O2 signaling in watermelon plants.•Exogenous H2O2-improved chilling tolerance in watermelon is independent of 2-Cys peroxiredoxin (Cl2-CP).•The antioxidant enzymes (Cu/Zn-SOD and GR) could be activated by H2O2 treatment in Cl2-CP-silenced watermelon plants under chilling stress.
