•A fungus strain isolated from U-mill tailings produces Mn oxides nanoparticles.•Barium (a surrogate of Ra) adsorbs to the Mn oxides forming inner-sphere complexes.•The apparent Kd is comparable to that of Ra in U-mill tailings at our study site.
