•An entire family of betalain pigments derived from dopamine was obtained.•Color and fluorescent properties were characterized in-depth for the novel betalains.•Antioxidant and anti-aging effects of the betalains were tested in vivo.•A just discovered pigment from quinoa increased the lifespan of C. elegans up to 7%.
