•Magnetic and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) measurements indicate marked changes in late Holocene sediment provenance in the Red River Delta.•Higher hematite content in sediments deposited since 0.5 ka reflects probably drier soil condition in the catchment.•Abundant fine-grained magnetic minerals in sediments deposited since 0.5 ka indicates surface soil erosion caused by human activities.
